As I was writing this article, I got a message from BallerBlogger (a great site, give them a bookmark) about Jerry Brown's recent article in the East Valley Tribune regarding the difficulty the Suns have in finding a legit back-up point guard. It seems this is gaining more national attention with the Suns struggling this year coupled with their horrific turnover rate of about 17 a game.
Ben's Note: It boggles my mind that no one has noticed that one of the main reasons the Suns players are turning the ball over more is because it's not in Nash's hands as much this year? The more chances that other players have to create and handle the ball, the more likely it is that turnovers will increase. Especially if they aren't as good a ball handler as Nash, which no one is. Just a thought.
Back to Goran Dragic and Sean Singletary. There is even an entire site devoted to explaining why Goran Dragic should be cut or sent to the D-League. While I do admire the passion, guess what - I'm not remotely ready to give up on either of our back-ups: Goran or Sean. And Suns fans, you shouldn't be either.
Here's why...
- How could anyone, legitimately, analyze a back-up's play thus far on the Suns and make concrete assumptions? With an entirely new coaching staff, a completely different philosophy on offense, a larger emphasis on defense, and the addition of 4 new rotation players...it is WAY too early.
- They are rookies!! One has moved over from Europe and the other has been traded twice before his first game in the NBA. I don't need to elaborate on this one.
- They are backing up one of the great distributors ever to play the game. We should not expect them (or anyone other than Deron Williams, Chris Paul, or Tony Parker) to be close to Nash's play.
- Through 18 games, Porter has been experimenting with rotations and minutes and there is no one on the team (literally) who has a good feel for the system yet. And that's how it should be. We have a coach who is going to try new things and if they don't work, as this article shows, he is going to modify his approach. That's all we can ask for.
- Essentially, they are doing what we need them to do and what Marcus Banks didn't do. They are bringing up the ball and passing it to a wing. That's it. Maybe sometimes they'll score or make a good assist, or even get a steal now and then. We don't need them to shoot much. They aren't turning the ball over at an alarming rate. And they aren't making a huge amount of glaring mistakes. Plus, it's giving Nash a little rest. We can't expect them to come in and be perfect or make us forget that Nash isn't playing.
- We coveted Tyronne Lue for crying out loud! Are you telling me that he is a better option? He is riding the pine in Milwaukee behind Luke Ridnour and Ramon Sessions....
- Contrary to some belief, they do have the ability to be a good point guard and I know them when I see them. I never wanted Marcus Banks because he is a shooting guard that brings the ball up the court. Goran and Sean both have a good vision and understanding of the game. Playing point guard for over 15 years, I pride myself on the fact that I know what constitutes a good PG...both Goran and Sean have the ability.
- Did I mention they are rookies playing in a system that the coaches haven't even figured out and it's only 18 games into the season?

100% with you on this one. Even though both have been pretty ineffective at times and Dragic has looked awful, it really has been a small sample size.
I think that fans were waiting for a chance to push the panic button this year with all of the chaos from the offseason. Well looks like everyone is pushing the damn thing and I think we all need to lay off a bit and let this team play it out....
I'm with you too. We really need to get our turnovers under control. I can't remember where I read it, but someone said we are the worst team in years at getting the ball into the post. I don't have any actual numbers, but I assume Nash's touches are down a bit since we go through Shaq a lot more, but his Assist/Turnover ratio is horrible. While he isn't getting as many assists off fastbreaks, it seems like that should mean taking less risks as well...
Thanks for both of your comments. I think what I'm most excited about is that Porter is willing to change and adapt. If this way isn't working, then change it. And this way certainly isn't working.
I heard Kerr on the radio this morning state that Shaq told the team not to worry about him...and run.
Let's hope that happens.
Sean Singletary is AMAZING. Just give him time to get comfortable and adjust to the speed fo the game. He will improve with each off-season. The guy is a baller
Thanks for your message, TW. I agree. I think it's unfair to judge our rookies in the midst of all our turmoil thus far.
Though, time will tell..
goran has the biggest heart! i come from the same city as he and i can tell you that he just needs time and chance to play. he is not great shooter but he is very athletic and fast! great defence player.
I agree. He seems like a great guy and he just needs some time.
